Teaching the Curvy Body: A Yoga Teacher Workshop

  • Yoga NW 1901 Northwest 26th Avenue Portland, OR, 97210 United States

Have you ever had a person with a bigger body walk in to your class and wondered how you could effectively teach that student? How you could connect? Hoped you didn't offend? Wondered if you needed to scrap your class plan or how to make your plan accessible last minute? Or perhaps, avoided eye contact altogether in a moment of panic, leaving that student to fend for themself?

For five years I have been working with these students who have struggled with starting a yoga practice. They are either afraid to try a studio class, or they have tried and have been ignored, publicly shamed (yes, it happens), or have needs that never got addressed so they don't return.

In the age of inclusivity, everyone thinks their yoga is accessible to anyone; or they've taken to marketing their class that way as a draw for more students. Of course not all yoga classes NEED to be right for all students, nor should they be. But ... if you are interested in offering classes that are truly "for every body", want to have skills in your pocket to subdue the occasional panic, or simply want to expand your skill base, please consider joining me for this enlightening workshop: Teaching the Curvy Body. In this 2.5 hour session, we will look at:

• Language, and how our words can help to create a safe space and inclusive practice
• Props, and how a few simple cue modifications can foster more-accessible alignment and a deeper felt-sense in any asana practice
• The need for specialty yoga and discussion on current class demographics, including how the common yoga scripts have failed this student population.
• Asana practice, demos, Q & A, and more!

This class is being offered by donation ($20-$30 suggested) and space is limited so grab your spot!
